After a quick dash to the front yard to heard the chooks back to their pen, in the wild and relentless winds, I noted a few garden tragedies on my travels. Our little green house has copped a beating from the breezes, after having just mended it 2 weeks ago. And worse still, the main patch of broadbeans have also suffered heavy casualties in the wind.
Be gone wild weather!
On the upside, I went for a poo run yesterday, down toward the Windsor/Richmond district and picked up 10 bags of horse manure for just $10. Squashing them into the back of the hyundai, I sped off feeling like I had just made the biggest poo heist of the century. We mulched it in under most of our fruit trees, and still have 5 bags left to dig into the patches where we will grow our pumpkins and tomatoes in spring.
We are also another step closer to starting a local food swap in our neighbourhood, powowing with the the local council to confirm a meeting place. We hope to begin the foodswap around October/November.

You know you two are just like super heroes with little green capes the way you are swooping around the neighbourhood changing the way people think about food and growing it.
ReplyDeleteYour method of poo collecting is so different to mine, I just walk out the door with a shovel and the horse happily obliges!
I can't wait for the wind to stop either , I can't get near the perpetual garden , the mulch will just blow away.
how I envy your easy poo collecting! We have been deliberating on what we should bring to plant in the perpetual garden. We are still very much looking forward to visiting.
ReplyDeleteI will send you home with free horse and cow poo ,just bring a big bag.
ReplyDeleteI can't wait either... bathrooms are in ....just have to clean up the mess and then in goes the carpet. Perpetual garden currently has builders junk on it , I am waiting until wind goes so I can make some progress on it.

J&J .... we did a poo run to windsor richmond yesterday too! so sorry to hear about the broad beans .... ours swayed a lot, but i had them staked fairly well and they survived (of course the tree that fell across our neighbors driveway is another matter).
ReplyDeleteplease keep me in the loop as you get the food swap up and going .... i'm literally around the corner from you guys (on chapman parade down towards the linsday gallery). i am dead keen to get involved with something like that! and we can talk aquaponics too! hubby has sourced his ponds and will be digging them in within a few weeks! anyway -- keep us in the loop ... sounds like we are very like minded with what we want to do on the community level!

gotta love the image of a "poo heist"! thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteHooray for the poo heist! Love it!
ReplyDeleteStarting a vegie swap is a terrific thing to do. Good luck with it, I'm sure it'll become very popular.
